Brothers Headed to Boston?
Maguire, Gyllenhaal pic may shoot in Beantown.

September 28, 2007 - The upcoming Jake Gyllenhaal-Tobey Maguire movie Brothers is reportedly looking to film in either Boston, Massachusetts or New Mexico, according to a new interview with the film's screenwriter David Benioff.

The Troy and Wolverine scribe informed The Boston Herald, "A lot of people in the business are really starting to talk about Boston."

"I was just talking about where we're going to shoot the movie and Massachusetts is one of the possibilities," Benioff said. "The other possible place is New Mexico. But everyone would rather come to Boston than New Mexico. Sorry, New Mexico."

The paper reports that Brothers will start filming this November under the direction of Jim Sheridan and that location scouting in Boston has already taken place.

Another Hollywood production reportedly mulling Boston as a location is The Box, a horror movie set to star Cameron Diaz and to be directed by Richard Kelly. The Boston Herald adds that, should The Box come to Boston, it would lens this fall.

Gyllenhaal, Maguire eye 'Brothers'
Duo in talks for Sheridan remake

Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are in negotiations to star in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" for Relativity Media.
The film, a remake of Susanne Bier's Danish-language war drama, centers on a man (Maguire) who is sent to fight in Afghanistan while his black-sheep brother (Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife and child.
Bier's film, which was released in 2004, stars Connie Nielsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.
In the remake, which David Benioff is writing, Gyllenhaal would play the younger brother and Maguire the older one.
"Brothers" is scheduled to begin shooting in early November.
Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing alongside Michael De Luca and Joni Sighvatsson.
Relativity most recently produced the Russell Crowe-Christian Bale starrer "3:10 to Yuma," which recently opened at No. 1.
Gyllenhaal, whose credits include "Zodiac" and "Brokeback Mountain," most recently starred in "Rendition," which unspooled last week at the Toronto Film Festival.
Maguire is hot on the heels of Sony's "Spider-Man 3" and also recently appeared in "The Good German."

Tobey nuevamente con Reese Witherspoon y Gary Ross para Tokyo Suckerpunch!

Tobey Maguire, the star of three "Spider-Man" films that have generated more than $2.5 billion for Japanese corporate giant Sony, now has not one but two Japan-related projects in the works.

Warner Bros. announced Friday that it had purchased the film rights to "Robotech," an epic Japanese anime sci-fi series about giant robots on Earth, that Maguire will produce with Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") writing the screenplay.

But the delightfully titled "Tokyo Suckerpunch," which Maguire has been developing as producer and star for two years with screenwriter Ed Solomon ("Men in Black") and producers Lucy Fisher and Doug Wick ("Memoirs of a Geisha"), has also recently picked up momentum. Now it looks like the movie -- a romantic comedy/action/modern noir hybrid that uses live-action and anime -- will reunite Maguire with "Pleasantville" costar Reese Witherspoon and writer-director Gary Ross, who also directed him in "Seabiscuit."

"One of the most attractive things about it is that it combines anime with live action," says Ross, who mixed black-and- white and color footage as a thematic device in "Pleasantville," his 1998 directorial debut. "It presents a lot of stylistic opportunities in how you shoot the live action so that it works harmonically."

Sony acquired the rights to Isaac Adamson's poppy 2000 novel "Tokyo Suckerpunch: A Billy Chaka Adventure" in April 2005, but last month Ross became attached to develop another draft with Solomon that he will direct if it gets greenlighted. Adamson wrote several other Billy Chaka books -- "Hokkaido Popsicle," "Dreaming Pachinko" and "Kinki Lullaby" -- which open up the possibility of another franchise for Maguire.

A draft dated May 22, 2007, is a jaunty, unpredictable foray into the peculiar, pulsing Tokyo cityscape. Billy Chaka -- popular graphic novelist, Cleveland native and rabid Japanophile -- travels to Japan for the first time to attend the premiere of a cheesy movie made from his self-mythologizing work (in Adamson's novel, Chaka is a journalist for teen magazine Youth in Asia). There, he must contend with not only jarring culture shock but also mysterious fans, Dolph Lundgren (who stars as the movie Chaka) and a dangerous, mob-related kidnapping that starts to resemble one of his own crazy plots.

All, of course, while love-hate sparring with his cute and resourceful editor, Sarah, played by Witherspoon. Among the pleasures Solomon delivers are some laugh-out-loud but very black physical comedy, a tense but funny sojourn in a love motel and the prospect of hearing Witherspoon slip in and out of flawless Japanese.

"What Ed does so well is he captures that kind of 1930s male-female banter," Ross says.

Though Ross says he, Maguire and Witherspoon are all game to make the film, potential production depends mostly on Oscar winner Witherspoon's schedule -- she's committed to doing "Four Christmases" with Vince Vaughn this year -- and, of course, Solomon's rewrite.

Tobey a punto de llevar a la pantalla grande a ROBOTECH!

Sept 7, 2007

TORONTO -- After slipping on a mask for Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire might be slipping into a giant robot for "Robotech."

After a lengthy negotiation, Warner Bros. Pictures has picked up the rights to bring anime classic "Robotech," which featured giant robots known as mechas, to the big screen. Maguire is producing through his Maguire Entertainment banner and is eyeing the lead role in what the studio plans on being a tentpole sci-fi franchise.

"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

Drew Crevello also is producing through his Supercool Hollywood BigTime Prods. Craig Zahler ("The Brigands of Rattleborge") has been tapped to write the screenplay.

"Robotech" was a cartoon series during the 1980s from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion concerns a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce; Jason Netter will serve in a producer capacity.

Matthew Reilly brought the project to Warners and is overseeing. Daniel Shafer brought the project to Maguire and will shepherd for the company.

The success of DreamWorks/Paramount's $311 million-grossing "Transformers" has other studios looking to assemble a giant robot movie of their own. Last month, Regency picked up 1980s Japanese anime series "Voltron," with Mark Gordon attached to produce. Ironically, Warners had the first giant robot movie back in 1999: Brad Bird's animated feature "The Iron Giant."

Maguire is repped by CAA, Management 360 and attorney Steve Warren. Zahler is repped by UTA and attorney P.J. Shapiro.
